“Growl!” is an improvisatory piece using extended techniques for the trumpet. The transitions from improvisation to written music should be seamless. No one should know where the improvisation began or ended. “Growl!” makes use of ½ Valve technique, air blown through the horn, highest note possible markings, flutter tongue, tongue pops, tongue noises through the instrument, and various techniques of blowing “pitched” sounds. The work is inspired by jazz and the “free jazz” or “avante-garde” jazz movement. Artists such as Anthony Braxton, Lester Bowie, Eric Dolphy and Don Cherry should be listened to for improvisational and stylistic ideas. The performer is encouraged to take liberties with the written material as a fine jazz artist would
